It's hard to overestimate Coltrane's influence on jazz. He helped to develop the use of modes and was at the instrumental in the evolution of free jazz.
Although not a guitarist, Coltrane has inspired countless jazz guitarists, and many of Coltrane's compositions have become jazz standards, performed by players of all instruments.
Playing music originally written for other instruments on guitar is an excellent way to broaden one's horizons and to avoid the typical clichés and fingerings that guitarists often fall into.
